Last year, I was a complete wreck - I thought I didn't want what I've always known I wanted (confusing, right?). Back then, I was working for a start-up design company as a senior designer + operations officer. It was an amazing and humbling experience; I was living my dream of becoming a designer (and actually earn money).
After a year and a few months, I started feeling unmotivated. And the work that was supposedly inspiring and fulfilling for me felt like a drag, a hassle or something I was forced to do. I slacked off, put it off, missed my deadlines and more. I felt like I was a failure and I didn't know what to do about it.
So I decided to take a break - a complete break. I gave up my job because I thought "this is not for me" and I was dragging people down. I focused on other things - university, anime/manga, Japan and blogging. But I keep coming back to design. I keep finding myself browsing design portfolios, reading about the latest design trends and generally, being attracted to good design.
In the middle of it all, I chanced upon this quote by Frederick Buechner:
The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet.
...and I was just hit, with amazing force, with the realization that design is where I'm called. I've read this quote many times before; it's nothing new to me. At that moment, I just knew that this is where my heart is at and this is what makes my heart sing.
After working intensely on my goal-setting for five/six days, it's now clear in my hand what I want to do and the steps that I need to take in order to get there. It's challenging and laborious, yes, but it feels right to me. I may have to revise and re-do the entire process somewhere along the way but I know I'm heading for something great.
To cap this off, I have a new thing in my blog called the Mystery Box. It's a box full of goodies made by yours truly and I'm sharing one exciting thing at a time to you ;) The quote I shared above is one of the most impactful quotes for me and if you feel the same way, I designed a wallpaper just for you!
